Functional diagnostics is one of the branches of medicine that combines certain types of diagnostic procedures. It allows to objectively assess the functionality of body organs and systems. At the same time their physical, chemical and other objective indicators can be assessed using additional instrumental and laboratory methods.
What is the main principle of functional diagnostics?
An organ dysfunction does not always correspond to changes in its structure. For example, in case of bronchial asthma breathing disorders can be serious, but organ changes are usually minor.
And on the contrary there are such diseases in case of which the main problem is organ dysfunction. Functional diagnostics is intended to study this aspect.
Functional diagnostics methods are used to investigate the functions of different body systems:
- pulmonary functions;
- cardiologic functions;
- digestive functions;
- kidney functions;
- endocrine functions;
- neurological functions.
When doctors talk about functional diagnostics, pretty often they mean cardiovascular diagnostics which includes the following methods:
- Holter monitoring;
- 24-hour blood pressure monitoring;
- treadmill test;
- duplex and triplex colour scanning of vessels;
- ventilatory lung capacity and respiratory function assessment.
